POSITION
Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting the Teacher/Interventionist(s) of assigned age group(s) with implementation of developmentally appropriate activities for preschool children ages 6 weeks to 5 years enrolled in therapeutic early childhood program; serving as the lead bus driver to pick up children for therapeutic classes and delivering them home; preparing and serving food from pre-planned USDA menus; and performing routine cleaning and maintenance.
Collaborates with Teachers to promote the health and education of each child and to assure a smooth flow of written communication between families and teachers.
Other duties as assigned by the Site Supervisor and Program Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/MAJOR JOB
Responsibilities:
Classroom Assist Teacher/Interventionists in providing developmentally appropriate activities for children in therapeutic classroom group settings.
Attend to the needs of individual children, considering their interests, talents and individual style of learning, as well as their cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Provide input to Teacher/Interventionists in planning and preparing activities.
Observe and participate in all classroom activities to ensure safety of each child.
Complete accident and incident reports as needed.
Discuss with Teacher/Interventionists any concerns and accomplishments regarding classroom experience and behavior.
Maintain a clean, safe and welcoming appearance and learning environment of the classroom(s), including cleaning floors, surfaces and toys after each class session.
Transportation Serve as lead driver for the Relief Nursery (RN) bus/van, picking up children for therapeutic classes and delivering them home.
Drive the RN bus/van as needed for special events with enrolled families, in order to provide transportation to families as needed.
Coordinate the regular maintenance & upkeep of the RN bus/van, to include the scheduling of oil changes, vehicle inspections, and other maintenance/repairs as needed.
Food Program & Facility Prepare snack and/or lunch from rotating menu for groups of up to 11 children.
Clean and sanitize kitchen area daily, and bathrooms and classrooms per supervisor's request and/or on rotating schedule.
Ensure that garbage and recycling are taken out of the building as needed (daily/weekly).
Comply with all health and safety standards per state regulations.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
Respond effectively to emerging and crisis situations.
Attend staff meetings, community events, and other parent/staff events as assigned.
Obtain at least 15 hours of continuing education per year in the field of early childhood care and education.
Maintain a neat, clean and professional appearance.
Comply with state guidelines regarding mandated reporting of suspected abuse and/or neglect.
Document hours and mileage in accordance with Relief Nursery policy.
Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with Relief Nursery policy.
Complete other tasks as assigned by supervisor JOB COMPLEXITY:
This is a dynamic position that demands the ability to be self-directed and respond to the changing and individual needs of at-risk families of children with significant mental health needs.
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
This position demands interactions with a variety of public and private community organizations, agencies, and communities.

Must have reliable transportation & maintain a valid Oregon driver's license, and have a driving record permitting coverage under the corporate liability policy.
If driving a personal vehicle for work purposes must also have and maintain personal auto liability coverage.
Relate tactfully, sensitively and non-judgmentally with young children and their families.
Ability to work with parents and their children in a warm, calming, respectful, encouraging and patient manner.
Work well with children and parents of diverse backgrounds.
Work well both independently and as a team player.
Must possess good organizational skills and ability to work effectively in changing situations.
Sufficient maturity and good judgment to function in crisis situations.
Physical ability to lift and carry children plus good physical stamina.
Experience/background working with families with multiple risk factors and knowledge of community resources is helpful.
Excellent communication skills, written, verbal, and non-verbal.
Knowledge of early childhood development (birth to six years), curriculum development and implementation, positive discipline, and early childhood learning strategies.
Good stress management, self care, active listening, analytical, and conflict resolution skills.
Willingness to seek and accept supervision and implement recommendations in a timely manner.
Must be able to work in a multicultural setting.
Requires strict adherence of HIPAA standards in the office workspace to ensure client confidentiality.
EDUCATION and/or
Experience:
Completed at least 10 semester credits or 15 quarter credits in early childhood education or child development AND minimum six months' teaching experience in a comparable group setting with the assigned age group.
Exceptions may be made with a two-year Professional Development Plan in place.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, write, and understand directions in English.
Must have the ability to write memos and other correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, clients, and the general public.
Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to read, write, and speak English.
Culturally sensitive, bilingual, and/or bicultural preferred.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
OTHER SKILLS:
Knowledge of and competent use of the internet, email, and word processing programs (Microsoft Word and Excel).
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Must have sound judgment, common sense in decision-making, and good reasoning ability in dealing with coworkers and clients.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
A current clearance from the Central Background Registry.
Current First Aid Certification, CPR card, Food Handler's Card, Annual Mandatory Reporter/Child Abuse and Neglect training.
Must have a current driver's license, car insurance, and access to a vehicle.
